Swiss Village
"?If you are looking to hold down costs on a ski trip, staying near, but not at the ski resort usually saves a lot of money. For Brian head, the closet alternative to staying in a condo or at one of the lodge at the ski area base is to stay in Parowan, 12 miles downhill. Parowon has three little motels and two lodges. I dont know what lodges mean in this context. There is much greater choice 37 miles north on I-15 at Beaver, where prices are even lowernow that Beavers local ski resort, Elk Meadows, has closed to the public. If it were my choice,Id opt for Beaver. The drive isnt that bad. Snow is rare on I-15 which runs through the desert, and you can go 75-80 mph on dry pavement, but one trip we did stay at the Swiss Village, about which there isnt much to say. The Swiss Village is a small, decent motel. Nothing stood out as particularly outstanding, but more importantly, nothing negative stood out either as long as you understand that you are stuck in Dullsville. Sunrise is the biggest thing to happen in Parowan. Specifically, the spring solstice sunrise illuminates a famous ancient Indian pictoglyph some miles west of town through a crack in a rock, an astonomical set up by the oldest Americans that works like Stonehenge. There is no nightlife in Parowan. There is little day life, but that is no matter because you go skiing. If you ski all day, you will be tired enough at night to not mind the lack of apres ski. You will want a good night sleep, and the Swiss Village Inn delivers. There is a hot tub, (a blessing after a day of skiing), discounted rooms, and lift ticket packagesavailable.Parowan sits almost at the base of the mountain range. Brian Head is 3,700 ft higher. The 12 mile drive is all uphill, but it is a steady, even climb, and the only thing Utahs government does right is to keep the roads to the ski areas well cleared in winter. As roads to western ski areas good, the odds are pretty good that you wont have serious problems getting there.Head out of town a couple ofmiles in the opposite direction of Brian Head to the Truck Stop for a good price on gas." - a Igougo user

Cedar Breaks National Monument
"We didn't plan to visit Cedar Breaks on our trip to Southern Utah this April as we had been told that the highway 148 is closed in Winter due to heavy snow and you can't get to it other than by snowmobile. We visited Duck Creek hoping to see some snow but there wasn't any as the weather had been too warm but highway 148 was still closed, as at over 10,000 feet it still had snow. They told us in the village that the previous year one of the dirt roads had been paved and now linked highway 14, just east of Duck Creek with highway 143 just south of Panguitch Lake. This meant that we could get up to Cedar Breaks and although we wouldn't be able to enter the National Monument we would find an overlook just round the corner from the junction with the 148. It isn't on all maps, some show it as a dirt road, but it is a proper road and we're told it is open all year round as it doesn't have the same elevation as the 148 so it doesn't have the same issues with snow. The 143 was open all the way, despite the deep snow we saw at the junction with the 148, and the view of Cedar Breaks was stunning." - a Tripadvisor user
