New Canaan, Connecticut

New Canaan, Connecticut Hotels, Things to do, and Vacation Information.

Most towns have a street called “Main Street” and at the center of the town is the “Town Hall.” But New Canaan in Connecticut has neither of these. It wasn’t planned as a town and so there was no town hall or central common. It didn’t begin as a slowly growing settlement and so there was no “Main Street.” In 1731, it was actually registered as “Canaan Parish” a religious entity by Connecticut’s colonial legislature. As a result, when the community was finally declared a town in 1801, the families are scattered all over the area. Instead of having a main central school, there are several district schools that are quite different from each other. But the community inevitably grew and became a major force in the shoe industry. In the 20th century, after discovering the peace and quiet of this community through several New Canaan vacations, the wealthy residents of nearby New York City moved in. Today, it is a shopping Mecca. The seemingly unplanned beginnings of New Canaan provided a unique advantage in the tourism industry. New Canaan vacations are shopping adventures and the shops are scattered all over the area. For travelers who love to satisfy their appetites, the places to go are the Chef Luis for gourmet dinners of tuna tartar and Tex-Mex fajitas, the Gelatissimo for the Gelato, New Canaan’s most sought-after treat, and the Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee for award-winning and world-renowned gourmet roasted coffee.
