Central City, Colorado
Travelers will appreciate their Central City vacations more if they know a little bit about its history. It was in 1859m when John Gregory discovered gold in an area very near Central City; this became known as the "Gregory Lode" and it drew 10,000 gold seekers from all over the world. Soon, the Central City was founded and this area became the top mining center in the whole of Colorado. Because of this, the city also became known as the "Richest Square Mile on Earth."
However, not everyone struck it rich during the gold rush but those who did settled in Central City and became incredibly wealthy. As can be expected from a mining town though, Central City was a rowdy place; the city recorded 217 fist fights and 97 revolver fights in 1861; what is amazing is that not a single person was killed. With such a colorful and interesting history, it is really not surprising that it is home to popular casinos and gambling establishments these days.
But Central City definitely has more things to offer. A lot of people decide to spend their family vacations in Central City because of the variety of winter and summer activities available here. Some of these recreational activities include sledding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, kayaking, hunting, back packing, camping, and even gold panning.
