THINGS TO DO

  1. South Mountain Park
"Lots to explore and do" - a Go City Kids user
  2. Mystery Castle
"A trip to the Mystery Castle should be placed in context. First, the daughter of the guy who built the castle still lives there. As a result, every nook and cranny is filled with knick-knacks and tchochkes reflecting the resident's taste. Second, although it is interesting to have the daughter actually conduct the tour (at least the first leg), and although she is a sweet lady, she isn't a professional docent and the tour isn't terribly insightful. Third (and this ties in with the second point), you won't really learn much about the various components and construction of the house. That said, the castle is really interesting place and (particularly in light of the sparse offerings of Phoenix), it is worth a trip. Combine it with lunch at Carolina's Mexican Food (1202 E Mohave St, Phoenix, Arizona 85034) for an inexpensive afternoon with kids. Mystery Castle is very easy to get to. Just drive south on 7th Street past all of Phoenix's shantytowns, then past Baseline, until 7th Street comes to an end. The street then becomes a dirt road that turns to the left (West) -- there is a sign. Follow the dirt road for a couple of hundred feet and you're there." - a Tripadvisor user
  3. South Mountain Park Scenic Drive
"This is a little known but fascinating part of the Phoenix experience. The rangers are very courteous and informative. the views are impressive, and hey, there are wild miniature pigs running around in this park. Maybe you can see one." - a Yahoo user
